The Benefits of Continuous Feedback

This isn't the first time we've written about this. And until we've transitioned all our clients to a more effective way of managing performance, it won't be the last.

ComplexHR recognise the move from a traditional performance appraisal process to a continuous feedback model isn't easy and requires a comprehensive understanding and appreciation of the business' culture and objectives.

We invest a great deal of time in securing our knowledge of each business and the culture in which our clients operate in order to tailor our approach when supporting clients through transitions such as this. We strongly believe in the importance of effective feedback specifically when identifying and retaining talent.

It's key to understand that continuous feedback is especially preferred by the younger generation who have grown up in an era where social media has meant feedback is instantaneous.

Dr Iain Henderson, subject leader for organisational behaviour and programme leader for the MSc in Human Resource Management, at Edinburgh Business School, Heriot-Watt University, says continuous feedback is what really makes performance management effective and builds the culture that performance is central to work.

“One great advantage of it is that if the organisation’s goals change then objectives, standards, key accountabilities and competencies can all be updated and revised quickly without having to wait for the next scheduled formal appraisal interview,” says Henderson. “All appraisal systems claim flexibility in this regard, but a culture of continuous feedback really does allow this to happen fast and effectively and most formal systems do not.”

Robert Ordever, executive director at reward and recognition solutions company O.C Tanner Europe, agrees continuous feedback is important for promoting ongoing improvements.

“A regular feedback cycle between managers and employees, results in timely corrections to behaviours, improved and ongoing development, and a better manager and employee relationship."
